Why the Eye is a masked quartet created in Brussels in 2013 around DjP’s surprising instruments. This four-piece in strange, furry masks deliver hypnotic, raw music, which they describe as ‘prehistoric techno’, a tribal-noisy-experimental decoction that shakes bodies into a trance.
Transposing a style of music born of the encounter between man and machine onto unstable DIY instruments is also a political commitment to fragility and a form of degrowth. It aims to contribute to a more inclusive society. The relationship between the members of Why The Eye and their instruments necessarily leads to a different kind of relationship with their audience. Intimate, joyful, festive, and also not consumerist.
Why The Eye are well known on the underground scene, first in Brussels, then all over Europe. By definition, this recognition remains a bit of a secret, despite appearances at Sonic Protest in Paris, Hop Pop Hop in Orléans, and other similar visible events. The band moves up a gear, taking part in MIL in Lisbon, before ESNS and Tremor in 2025.
Their self-titled debut album was released in 2017 on the Plynt & Ångström labels. They’re back with a new LP Inspirex (Exag Records 2024). Damien Magnette who produced the album says, “The album is live music based on energy. It has a chaotic side. How do you convey the chaotic, wild, animal energy of live music on record? My point of view is that to achieve this energy, you have to do exactly the opposite in the studio. A lot of layering. Lots of overdubs that we can’t do live. It’s all these elements that give the album its wildness.”
